SuperNatural

SuperNatural Collection is the first release of a series of candle holders, whose design, manufacture, and authentication rely entirely on digital processes.  The peculiar shape of the SuperNatural artifacts is “designed” by an algorithm, which simulates the growth patterns of natural elements like corals, roots, or hyphae. Although the artifacts might be similar in size, proportions and topology, each one is absolutely unique. Like nature, the algorithm never repeats itself.

The digital models are materialized with a special 3D printing process, which uses quartz sand as raw material. This technique, which consists of binding fine granules, layer by layer, until the object materializes, delivers an exact physical copy of the 3D model.

Each candle holder is associated with an Non-fungible Token (NFT), which functions as a digital certificate, proving both the ownership and the authenticity of the piece. A Smart Contract unlocks the buyer access to the 3D model, available - as a “digital backup” - for further printing.

Studio Formosa reflects on how, in a fully digitalized production chain, the implicit worth attributed to craftsmanship fades away. The fact that one digital file can enable the production of endless copies creates a condition that automatically deflates the value of each artifact. Blockchain offers the possibility to revert the situation, allowing the author to couple her digital creation with a unique signature (NFT), restoring its unrepeatable substance. The ultimate question is: where is the value actually stored, in the object itself or the digital certificate?
